What is an Apostille and when do I need one?
Apostilles are an internationally recognised form of legal certification for documents, based on a 1961 Convention. It’s likely that you’ll need one if you want to use our translation in one of the 118 countries who signed the Convention (other than the source language country).
To take the example of a document issued in Ukraine: a doctor from Ukraine who wants to work in Germany usually needs proof of the qualifications they obtained in Ukraine. For their degree certificate from Ukraine to be officially certified for Germany, they would need an Apostille. We can translate the degree certificate and Apostille into German, with transliteration according to ISO 9:1995 (E). The translation will be done by a professional certified or sworn in Germany. In this situation we are translating a document and an Apostille, because the document was issued by an authority or institution outside Germany.
To take the example of a document issued in Germany: a Ukrainian citizen applying for German nationality has received a letter of assurance. This document was issued in the Federal Republic of Germany and an Apostille was applied here. When we receive the document to translate, it already has one Apostille on it. We will translate the document and the Apostille, and can then certify that the translation of both is accurate and complete. On request, we can also obtain another Apostille: this time for our certified translation. Now both the original and the translation into Ukrainian can be used for official purposes in Ukraine.
